Key insights

67% of employees began contemplating their exit more than 3 months before they left

Employees hardly ever leave a team abruptly. Just like any relationship, one party most likely has considered checking out long before the notification gets sent in.

Company culture and clear paths for growth are important to talent

The day-to-day working environment and overall company culture were noted as the top reasons why young professionals are leaving their roles with African startups. This, combined with a lack of growth opportunities and the quality of leadership, is responsible for the high turnover of talent that has become commonplace within the tech ecosystem.

Communication gaps from managers

There are few things more important as a manager than being able to communicate effectively with your team. Ensuring that team members know what’s expected of them and feel comfortable asking questions or providing feedback to their managers is key in being able to lead an efficient, successful and happy team. If expectations aren’t communicated clearly, it can be detrimental to the success of your team.
